(Reuters) – A 17-year-old scholar was shot and wounded inside his Wisconsin highschool by a police officer after bringing a handgun into the constructing and failing to adjust to orders to give up the weapon, officers mentioned.

Waukesha South Excessive College, about 20 miles (32 km) west of Milwaukee, was placed on lockdown after which dismissed for the day after the capturing, police mentioned.

The incident occurred after the coed pulled out a handgun and didn’t reply to the varsity useful resource officer’s insistence that he give it up.

“The suspect is a 17-year-old male, he was transported to the hospital and was in steady situation,” Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack instructed reporters outdoors the varsity on Monday. “No officers or different college students have been injured on this incident.”

Jack praised the quick response of the varsity sources division and different officers on the scene. He mentioned the officer who injured the coed appeared to have “acted inside state statute and division coverage,” resorting to gunfire solely when de-escalation efforts failed.
